Pollution and silt

The Voronezh Sea was created in 1974 in the riverbed of the river Voronezh. The sea is a 30 km. long and 1 km. wide lake which was created by damming the river 10 km south of the city. The lake runs from the north to the south and serves as a reservoir for water and transportation zone. Along the east side of the lake a new section of the city of Voronezh was situated. In the past the Voronezh River silted up and could not be used any more for transportation. After 40 years this is the same case with the Voronezh Sea. The combination of pollution from the river and city around it and low water depth leads to poor water quality. The main goal for the Voronezh Sea is clean swimming water for the next generations to come.

The Voronezh Sea needs water with high quality. The water should have the quality of swimming water, the highest standard of water quality. The Voronezh Sea will serve as a reservoir for the region, and it is important for the local climate in the city. It is a transport zone for boats and water sports and has recreational qualities. To reach these goals in the next decennia we need two types of measures. Measures that effect the pollution on the one hand and measures that effect the water depth of the lake on the other hand. For a number of problems the causes are outside the perimeter of the lake. These problems should be treated at the core. These problems are mostly related to pollution. With the closing of the dam all the sediment and pollution did not flush to the Black Sea but ended up in the Voronezh Sea. The lake became too nutritious and blooms with algae alongside pollution of metal salts and oil. The other problem is the silting up of the lake which causes a shallow lake and as result poor water quality. At the same time it closes the water down as a transport system. These are the problems the new plan for the Voronezh Sea has to deal with.

The Voronezh Sea works as a sink for pollution and sediment for the next generations. The sea will pollute and silt up again and again. In the first place we have to prevent further pollution in the future. To reach this we create a large marshland on the north side of the lake. The marshland catches the silt and purifies the water to a certain extent. In the last 40 years the silt created a polluted underwater soil. To solve this we have to remediate the polluted soils. The most severe polluted soils have to go into a temporary or permanent dredge depot which is situated next to the edge of the lake. This basin is a permanent or temporary storage for very polluted soil. There is and will be in the future a permanent need for storing silt to solve the problem of silting up of the lake. There are two possibilities. We could prevent silt reaching the lake and we can store the silt on land. We prevent silt reaching the lake by creating a large marshland on the north side of the lake. The water will flood the marsh and the marsh filters the water so when it reaches the lake it will be clean and with less silt. We can create a deeper cleaner lake through creating land. While creating a smaller lake we have the possibility to deepen it. We create a new full edge around the lake of around 150 meters wide. With this measure the water surface of the lake becomes about 15 % smaller.

We use the land as new lake-forest with beaches and parks, creating a Voronezh Sea with a green atmosphere and the city behind it. If we create less surface of water we can construct a deeper sea. For this reason we introduce small islands on two locations in the sea. The islands make the water body smaller at this point, so at the locations the water will flow faster. The faster water creates turbulence in the lake and thus a better water quality. The islands, which are forested, break the vast length of the lake in a number of segments. This creates a sea with a nice size for the city. The islands are used for recreational and wildlife purposes. The city of Voronezh is built with the back to the lake. This should change in the next decennia. The Voronezh Sea should become the front of the city. For this reason we need a new water quality. Along the lake-side next to the city centre a new water-boulevard is situated with shops, restaurants, café’s, new dwellings, a marina, a new museum and offices are erected. On the new land in two locations next to the lake we introduce a urban area for living quarters.
