Competition Altlast-N6/ landmark Wiener Becken/ Wiener Neustadt/ A
2015
Vienna
Altlast-N6 is one of the more old dumps in the countryside of Niederösterreich part of the Industrieviertel around Vienna. Many of them have been sanitized already. Because of the depth of the dumpsites they are a threat to the drinking water of Vienna. The water is collected on the Wiener Becken and than sanitised trough the watermill for the city. The sanitation of the sights costs hundreds and millions of Euros.
Illegal or thoughtless dumping of waste material around Wiener Neustadt threatened the water supply of the city of Vienna in the end. The sanitation of the sights covers up a dark period of the way we used our natural habitat. We are confronted with our own vulnerability concerning our surroundings and natural resources. The threat to the water quality becomes visible as a landmark in the night.
Wiener Becken
To mark this thoughtlessness we created a landmark. The sign marks the quality of the Wiener Becken which is the supply of fresh water for the city of Vienna for decades to come. On the sight of Altlast-N6 we plant a new forest which will develop in the next century. Above the trees against the backdrop of the forest the word Wiener Becken is visible in black letters. The words can be read from the highway. In the night the words become visible because they are lighted bleu as the color of the drinking water from the Wiener Becken.
